[HunterXHunter] The chimeraANT arc and its many layers

There is a lot to unpack here. I have never seen the chimera ant arc as this multi-layered story that was told side by side with the gungi side story. Well maybe that’s how it was to me, at first. I never thought much of the gungi side story as nothing more than mere filler.

But seeing this video changed my perspective. Seeing it side by side like this gives a new perspective. I’ll have to rewatch the arc again because I blitzed through the chimera ant arc and focused on the actions and the fight scenes.

I never realized the more nuanced story telling and how the whole gungi side is actually a subtle yet central story element to Meruem’s growth as a chimera ant (or rather in this case from mere monster to one with a heart of a human.)

The whole thing boils down to humans are more monster than some monsters. And up to this day, Meruem and Komugi’s story is one of the most impactful in the series (apart perhaps from Gon and Killua’s friendship). It’s kinda weird yet strangely interesting how I always sympathized with Meruem, even when he was portrayed as this ruthless villain.
